GOLF: Three Hawkeyes Begin Play at U.S. Amateur
ATLANTA, GA -- University of Iowa golfers Nate Yankovich, Carson Schaake and Sam Meuret began play at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday. The 312-player field will participate in 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday with the top 64 scores moving on to match play on Wednesday. The championship match will be played on Sunday.
Yankovich, a junior from Blacklick, Ohio, qualified for the U.S. Amateur on July 15 at Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Course in Sunbury, Ohio, posting a two-round score of 138 (-4) to lead all competitors. In June, Yankovich tied for 12th place at the 99th Annual Southwestern Amateur in Scottsdale, Arizona, posting a four-round score of 277 (-3).
Schaake, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska, and Meuret, a freshman from Brunswick, Nebraska, qualified for the event after tying for medalist honors at sectional qualifying in Omaha on July 8. The pair carded a two-round score of 138 (-4), besting the third-place finisher by six strokes.
Schaake’s best finish of his freshman campaign came at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational as he tied for fourth place with a three-round score of 215 (-1). The best round of his season came at the NCAA Columbia Regional, where he carded a 70 (-2) in the final round.
Meuret joins the Hawkeye roster after earning all-conference honors four times in his high school career. He won the 2013 Nebraska Class-C State title and earned medalist honors at the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier and the Nebraska Junior in 2013.
