MWL: Kernels stifle Wisconsin 5-2
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels outlasted the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-2 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday night. Jason Kanzler scored a run, batted-in two runs, and added a triple and a double in a great performance from the plate. Michael Quesada crushed two hits and brought in two runs in his four trips to the box. Aaron Slegers (5-2) picked up his fifth victory of the season.
Wisconsin got on the board 1-0 in the top of the second inning off a two-out triple down the right field line by Francisco Castillo.
The Kernels retaliated in the bottom half of the second by plating two runs on two extra-base hits. After crushing a double to lead-off the inning, Bryan Haar would be brought in by a Jason Kanzler triple. A Michael Quesada sacrifice-fly allowed Kanlzer to cross the plate and give Cedar Rapids the 2-1 lead.
Cedar Rapids increased the advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on Kanzlers second extra-base hit, this one being a two-out RBI-double.
Timber Rattlers starter Preston Gainey (1-3) exited after allowing three runs on five hits through five innings on the mound.
Harvey Martin entered out of the bullpen for Wisconsin in the sixth and gave up two runs on six hits in his two frames out of the pen.
Back-to-back doubles by Bo Altobelli and Quesada in the sixth pushed the Cedar Rapids edge to 5-1. Ryan Walker added to the inning with an RBI-single to right field that plated Quesada.
Kernels starter Aaron Slegers (5-2) left the game after six innings on the hill. Slegers surrendered one run on three hits while striking out four and walking three.
Alex Muren pitched in relief beginning the seventh inning and struck out five while giving up three hits in two scoreless innings of work.
The Rattlers started a comeback in the ninth off a lead-off solo homerun by Jose Pena to make the score 5-2.
Todd Van Steensel entered for the Kernels in the ninth and finished the game to secure the 5-2 victory. The right-hander allowed one run on the Pena home run and one walk in his one inning on the mound.
Cedar Rapids improved to (25-28) while Wisconsin fell to (24-28)

RHP Ryan Eades (3-6, 6.12) is scheduled to start Thursday for the Kernels while the Timber Rattlers are expected to counter with RHP Taylor Williams (1-1, 3.18).
