MWL: Another Loss for the Kernels

BURLINGTON, IOWA The Kernels lost 8-2 to the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Friday night for their seventh defeat in a row.

The Kernels were held to five hits and unable to solve Ryan Etsell, who went seven innings for the Bees. Etsell (3-1) allowed two runs over his seven innings for the victory. He allowed five hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Aaron Slegers (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season in six innings of work for the Kernels. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out one and walking none.

The Kernels grounded into an inning-ending double play to end both the first and second inning. However, Michael Quesada went all the way around the bases himself to lead off the third inning. The Kernels catcher smashed a solo home run to left field for his first of the season, putting the Kernels up 1-0.

Slegers allowed a leadoff single in the top of the first inning but then retired the next nine hitters to get through the third inning. The Bees broke through for two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. A throwing error by Kernels shortstop Ryan Walker allowed Erick Salcedo to reach base to start the inning. Mike Fish then doubled into right-center, moving Salcedo to third base. With the infield back, Salcedo scored on Eric Aguileras RBI groundout. Then, Brandon Bayardis broken-bat RBI single into shallow center plated Fish to put Burlington in front.

The Bees scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Three singles by Salcedo, Aguilera, and Bayardi loaded the bases. Angel Rosa then cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line. Rosa later scored on a RBI single by Stephen McGee, putting Burlington ahead 6-1.

The Kernels collected a run in the seventh inning, making the score 6-2. Mitch Garver led off the inning with a single and later scored on a RBI double to center by J.D. Williams.

Burlington responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off of reliever Alex Muren. Ismael Dionicio doubled to left to start the frame. Two batters later, he scored on Salcedos RBI single. Salcedo came home when Aguilera singled into center, increasing the Bees lead to 8-2. Muren went a total of two innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Bees finished the game with two relievers. Alan Busenitz sent the Kernels down in order in the eighth inning while Grant Gordon pitched around a walk and struck out the side in the ninth inning.

The series at Burlington continues through Sunday afternoon. The Kernels and Bees play on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Ryan Eades (3-4, 3.44) gets the start for the Kernels while RHP Clint Sharp (0-3, 4.80) starts for the Bees.

The Kernels return home on Monday, May 19 to take on the Beloit Snappers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. It will be Dollar Monday. Regular hot dogs, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips, and Cracker Jacks are each just $1.00.
