MWL: Kernels Roster Moves May 14, 2014

Cedar Rapids, IA -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that infielders Carlos Avila and Ryan Walker will join the Kernels from Extended Spring Training as infielder Engelb Vielma and outfielder Jason Kanzler have been placed on the 7-day disabled list. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
 
The Twins selected Avila in the 32nd round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Cal State Dominguez Hills. He spent last season at Elizabethton where he hit .206 with a double and four RBI and 24 games.
 
The Twins selected Walker in the 18th round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Texas-Arlington. He split last season between Elizabethton and Cedar Rapids, batting a combined .265 with five doubles, a home run and 16 RBI.
 
Vielma goes on the DL with a right hamstring strain and Kanzler goes on the DL with a concussion. Both injuries were suffered in Tuesdays doubleheader loss to Peoria.
 
Avila and Walker are both active and available for tonights 5:05 pm DH with the Peoria Chiefs. With todays transaction, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with seven players currently on the DL and one player on the Restricted List.
 
The Kernels wrap up a three-day home stand with a doubleheader, consisting of two 7-inning games, with the Peoria Chiefs at 5:05 pm on Wednesday. Its Free Money Wednesday, presented by First Federal Credit Union, as First Federal will hand out $500 to fans when the gates open at 4:00 pm with the top cash prize of $100.
