SOFT: Coe Will Host NCAA Regional
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The ninth-ranked Coe College softball team has been selected to host a regional for the NCAA Division III Softball Championships, it was announced today. The Kohawks earned an at-large berth into the field of 62 teams.
The three teams that Coe will welcome to the Cedar Rapids Regional are Augustana (IL), St. Scholastica and St. Thomas (MN). Augustana, the runner-up in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, enters play ranked 19th by the NFCA and boasting a 33-11 record. St. Scholastica, winner of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, is 27-10, and currently riding a 21-game winning streak. St. Thomas, ranked 15th by the NFCA with a 36-5 record, comes into regional play as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champs, and have won 20 consecutive games.
The Kohawks are scheduled to play St. Scholastica in their first game, with a starting time to be announced. The winner of that matchup will then play the winner of the Augustana-St. Thomas game. The winner of this four-team region will face the winner of the Pella Region, which features Central, North Central (IL), Washington-St.Louis and Luther, in a Super Regional.
This is the 14th overall appearance in the NCAA Regionals for Coe, and it is the ninth in the last 10 years. During that stretch, the Kohawks have won two regional championships, advancing to the NCAA College World Series in 2006 and 2009. Coe was the National Runner-Up in 2009. The Kohawks are 40-28(.588) in their 13 previous appearances.
Coe has played six teams that made an NCAA Regional this year, going 5-6 against them. The Kohawks have wins over Augustana, Central, Washington-St. Louis and Trine, and have suffered losses to Luther and Illinois Wesleyan.
Coe has a winning record in the all-time series against all three of its regional foes. The Kohawks are 2-1 against St. Scholastica, 9-4 versus Augustana and 7-5 when facing St. Thomas. Against possible Pella Regional opponents, Coe has winning records against Washington University (7-6) and Luther (36-28). The Kohawks are 23-27 all-time against Central and have never faced North Central.
