USHL: Saints Swept, Season Ends

DUBUQUE, IA -- The 2013-2014 season came to a close for the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday night. Dubuques late comeback attempt fell short, and Fighting Saints fell 3-2 to the Indiana Ice in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Ice swept the Eastern Conference Final series, three games to none, to advanced to the Clark Cup Final.

Dubuque opened the scoring on the powerplay 4:17 into the game. Alexx Privitera left the puck in the middle of the ice to Jacob Benson. The Dubuque winger darted in over the blue line into the Indiana zone. He fired a slap shot towards the goal that was deflected by Seamus Malone. The puck changed angles and bounced five-hole on Indiana netminder Jason Pawloski. The goal was Malones third of the post-season and made it 1-0 Dubuque.

After only firing four shots in the second period, Indiana was still limited offensively in period two, but were able to take advantage of their chances. Scott Conway tied the game at the 11:02 mark on a fluke goal. Brian Pinho fired the puck behind the net to Conway. He looked to cut out front, and fired a bad angle shot from the goal line. Dubuque netminder Kevin Reich knocked aside the original attempt, but Conway somehow jammed the puck off Reich and into the net to make it 1-1.

Shortly following, Indiana took the lead for the first time. Alex Talcott accepted a pass from Joshua Jacobs and lifted a shot over the blocker of Reich from the slot to make it 2-1. Talcotts first goal of the playoffs gave Indiana the lead heading into the games final period.

In the third period, Dubuque mounted several chances, but Indiana struck again. Tim Shoup left a shot go from the left point that Reich stopped. The rebound bounced around in the crease and was swatted into the net by Joe Sullivan. The puck barley rolled across the goal line to make it 3-1 Indiana.

Dubuque mounted a late comeback attempt as Jacob Benson cut the deficit to one goal. Max McHugh fired a pass from behind the net to Benson, who beat Pawloski short side to make it 3-2 with 1:18 remaining. However, Indiana was able to hold on to earn the victory and advance to the Clark Cup Final.

Dubuques 2013-2014 had many memorable moments under first year Head Coach and General Manager Matt Shaw. The club opened the season with a Bronze Medal win at the 2013 Junior Club World Cup, an international tournament where Dubuque represented the United States, in Omsk, Russia. The Fighting Saints finished the regular season in third place in Eastern Conference, posting a 33-23-4 record, and advancing to the post-season for the fourth straight year.

The Fighting Saints will return to the Mystique Community Ice Center for the 2014-2015 season starting in September. Next seasons schedule will be announced this summer. Season Tickets are available for the 2014-2015 season starting at just $23 per month. For more information, contact the Fighting Saints at 563.583.6880 or visit DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
