Rummage in the Ramp Diverts Tons from Landfill

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - It's that time of year again -- students in Iowa City are coming and going, often leaving their furniture behind.

But those household goods will soon be put to good use, thanks to the 8th annual Rummage in the Ramp sale.

The nine-day event connects anyone in Iowa City with gently used furniture, clothes, and appliances. Last year, it helped keep 30 tons of stuff from being dumped in the landfill.

"Most of this stuff is in great shape yet, or at least good shape, and can get at least a couple years out of it. So if you think about the resources, the labor, the natural resources that went into making this stuff, it doesn't make to use it for a couple of years and then throw it in the landfill when it can be used over and over to save the value of those resources," said Iowa City recycling coordinator Jennifer Jordan.

All the proceeds from the sale go to local non-profit organizations. Last year, the city donated more than $20,000 from the sale.
