Smulekoff's Announcement Today
CEDAR RAPIDS, (CBS2/FOX28) - A Cedar Rapids retail icon is closing its doors by the year's end.
Smulekoff's Home Store, has been and landmark of the City of Five Seasons for more than a century.
The store, one of the first of its kind, opened in 1889 on May's island.
As the store grew, it eventually settled into the building we all know on Third Avenue in 1942.
The city of Cedar Rapids will pay neatly $5 million dollars to own the building.
Even though the doors to their downtown store will close at the end of December of this year, it is unclear if the owners plan to relocate.
An announcement is expected to be made sometime Tuesday.
