Corridor Hospitals Meet Goals

DES MOINES, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Hospitals in the corridor are getting a reward for keeping patients out of the exam room.
Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield announced its new contracts with hospitals have saved taxpayers 12 million dollars in the past two years.
The Des Moines Register reports that Wellmark gave five hospitals a goal: keep patients healthy long term instead of just treating them every time they're sick.
The new type of contract pays hospitals and clinics more if they keep patients from having to keep coming back for expensive care.
Before, hospitals were given more money if they provided more care, regardless of whether it improved the patients health.
Mercy Cedar Rapids and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are just two of five hospitals that met these goals.
Health leaders in the Corridor say this long-term view is the best thing for Iowans.
