Irish Flag Draws Complaints In Waterloo
WATERLOO, IA (AP) -- A Waterloo business' decision to briefly replace the American flag with an Irish flag atop a downtown building has drawn criticism from residents.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the owner of the Black's Building replaced a U.S. flag with the Republic of Ireland's flag to honor Waterloo's Irish Fest, which runs Friday through Sunday.
Donna Nelson, of building owner Nelson Properties, also noted Waterloo department store owner James Black, who built the Black's Building, was of Irish heritage.
When people noticed the change Friday morning, Nelson says the company began getting complaints.
Although he understands the intent, Andy Shimek, of Custom Blacksmithing, says flying the Irish flag atop a high downtown building was akin to "wiping your feet on my flag."
Nelson says they'll make other arrangements next year.
