Inaugural CedarSpiel Curling Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- The Cedar Rapids Curling Club is hosting its first-ever bonspiel this weekend. In case you don't know, a bonspiel is what you call a curling tournament.

About 30 clubs from all over the country are in town for the weekend-long event, taking place at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The first draw was held Friday morning, and dozens more matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Four-time Olympic curler Debbie McCormick also has a team in the event, and will be on hand throughout the weekend. McCormick has been curling since she was a kid, and says it's a fun sport, especially because "it's something you can do with family, with friends, with spouses." She adds, "Just come on out and try it, you'll be addicted!"

Cedar Rapids Curling Club President Lon Peper says spectators are welcome to come out and watch the event. Those who want to try their hand at curling can also stop by for an open house, which will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30.

The inaugural CedarSpiel runs through Sunday at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. To find out more about the Cedar Rapids Curling Club, click here to check out their website.
