Tips for Tax-Free Weekend
WILLIAMSBURG, IA (CBS2/FOX28)- It's that time of year again when kids will soon be heading back to school and you might be looking for ways to save on back-to-school supplies.
CBS2 wanted to save you a few headaches and broke down everything you need to know to shop smart on tax-free weekend.
The key to saving money, is knowing what you need and what items are tax free before you walk inside the store.
Sally Colby has shopped with her sisters at Tanger Outlet for seven years.
"It was an accident, we just came and it happened to be tax-free weekend," Colby said.
Now, it's an annual tradition.
"We have found tons of deals," she said.
Coldby said she saved more money this year by combining promotions, coupons and no sales tax.
She said it's a shopping secret that retailers can't argue with.
In fact, managers said sales from Iowa's Tax-Free Holiday fall just behind Black Friday.
"The prices are good," Carter's Store Manager Amanda Crosser said. "The sales are awesome."
But many back-to-school shoppers should know there's more to it than just school clothes.
"Pajamas are tax free also," Crosser said.
School supplies like pens, crayons or backpacks are not.
"Clothing and footwear is non-taxable," Tanger Outlets General Manager Theresa Phillips said. "Anything less than $100 per item."
Phillips said to help confused shoppers, each store has a copy of the listed tax-free items.
"Parents know that not everything is gonna not be taxed," Crosser said.
But knowing ahead of time to buy shoes and your fall wardrobe will help save those extra bucks.
"We pay so much in taxes already it's a nice thing to do for people," Crosser added. "It's only two days out of the year."
A weekend break that may not break the bank or may help you not go broke.
