Iowa Man Convicted of Growing Pot Now in OR
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- An Iowa man who was convicted of growing marijuana is now in Oregon to purchase the drug legally.
Benton Mackenzie is a 48-year-old terminal cancer patient who was convicted earlier this month of growing 71 marijuana plants on his rural Scott County property. His wife Loretta was also convicted.
The pair traveled to Oregon with cash that was donated by family and friends.
He previously met with an Oregon doctor to apply for and receive a medical cannabis card. Mackenzie will be able to purchase and consume marijuana while in Oregon, but he cannot bring it to Iowa with him.
Oregon passed a medical marijuana law in 1998.
The Mackenzies await sentencing in Scott County District Court.
