Road Trippin' Iowa City Uptown Bill's

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28)  His picture was in almost every newspaper in the country, a famous actor portrayed him in a successful television movie and so many people came to visit his Iowa City coffee shop it prompted some to say Bill was even more famous than iconic Hawkeye Football Coach Hayden Fry. Bill was Bill Sackter, a man who spent 44 years of his life in an institution at a time when Minnesota and most other states just didnt know what to do with mentally challenged adults.  Writer Barry Morrow befriended Bill and brought him along when he moved to Iowa City and helped him start his own coffee shop.  Morrow eventually left for Hollywood to write successful movies such as Rain Man, but Bill stayed and became a star, living long enough to see Mickey Rooney portray him in the movie version of his life.  Sackters memory and legacy lives on in Iowa City where an expanded coffee shop still brings together those of all ages and abilities to enjoy each others company.
