Options Cut After Closing of Juvenile Home

DES MOINES, IA (AP) -- Some officials are concerned the Iowa Juvenile Home's closing has created an unequal system where girls don't have the same options.

The Des Moines Register reports Iowa lacks a proper facility for delinquent girls who committed crimes.

The juvenile home closed in January after questions were raised about the treatment of teenagers, including use of isolation cells and a lack of educational opportunities.

Since January, 33 girls might have been candidates for the juvenile home. Three were sent out of state and three were moved to adult court. The others were generally sent to private facilities.

State Court Administrator David Boyd says Iowa usually has no more than 20 delinquent girls that need housing at once. Policymakers will have to decide the best way to provide services.
