UI to Put Up Flood Barriers

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Weather permitting, the University of Iowa will begin installing flood barriers around the Mayflower Residence Hall on Monday afternoon to protect against flash flooding and severe weather.

To get the barriers in place, the City of Iowa City will close the two northbound lanes of North Dubuque Street on Monday afternoon, as well.

If weather conditions keep crews from closing the road and installing the barriers, they will start the process on Tuesday morning. The university is asking members of the community to find alternate routes.

"The move is a precaution in response to recent and predicted heavy rainfall, which threatens to raise the water in the Coralville Reservoir and Iowa River to flood levels over the next few weeks. UI officials are monitoring the situation closely," according to a university emergency release.
