Mobile Food Pantry in Benton Co.

VINTON, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Day after day, millions of Americans face the threat of not knowing where that next meal is coming from.

According to 'Feeding America,' an estimated 2,760 adults and nearly 1,160 children were food insecure in Benton County. Those problems are magnified during the summer months, when kids are out of school.

The group we spoke to Friday is mobilizing - literally- to solve the problem.

It all started with 5 women, and an area in need.

"We don't even have a name right now, we call ourselves a group of lady friends," volunteer Barbara Rego says

She sees the problems every day.
"I work in a daycare center, and I see a lot of single parents and working poor," Rego says.

"I heard from our counselor that we have 7 students who are classified as homeless," says fellow volunteer Shane Monaghan.

Those deficiencies gave this small group an idea - rather than have people search for food, bring the food right to the people.

Working with the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, the group arranged for more than 400 pounds of food to be delivered to Vinton Saturday morning.

"We're really excited to get nutritious and healthy fresh food to these families," says Anissa Bourgeacq with HACAP.

The mobile pantry is a first for HACAP, and they hope it isn't the last.

"We take what we learn at this first pantry and we expand it, and we'll try to get in as many communities as possible," Bourgeacq says.

On Saturday the focus will be on Benton County.

"We really don't know what to expect, but we're hoping for a lot of people," Rego says.

One thing they can count on - the joy that comes with helping your neighbor.

"Kinda privileged that I can help instead of being the one to be helped," Monaghan says.

Who knows how far that help may go? In the words of one lady friend-

"She was ready to take on the world, so I don't know where we go from here," Rego says

The First Mobile Food Pantry will be this Saturday, June 14th from 10:00 to 11:30 at the HACAP North Benton Center, 202 East 4th Street in Vinton.
