CRPD Warning About Fake Checks

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX28) Cedar Rapids police are warning businesses and residents about scammers trying to pass fake business checks.

CRPD says theyve seen an increase in the number of counterfeit checks in the metro area and that scammers behind the checks are recruiting unsuspecting people to cash the checks at banks.

The check will typically have the names of real businesses or companies on them, but will have false routing numbers. However, they say they have seen checks with fake business and company names on them.

Police are advising residents to use caution when cashing checks for other people or cashing checks they werent expecting.

Conviction for cashing a fake check can carry both a jail sentence and fine.
