1 Dead After Drowning at Coralville Lake

NORTH LIBERTY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - One man died in a drowning Saturday evening at Coralville Lake in Johnson County.

Just before 5:00 PM, authorities received a 911 call reporting that a man had gone under water near a diving rock at Scales Point and had not resurfaced.

At 8:50 PM, first responders recovered the body of Somphaeng Syvixay, 36, of Iowa City.  He was with a group of friends and family that had jumped from a pontoon to swim to the shore near the diving rock.

Two people began struggling in the water, and one was pulled from the water by people on the pontoon.  They were unable to find the victim at the time.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate.  An autopsy on the victim is pending.
