Mayors Seek Funds to Battle Ash Borer

DES MOINES, IA (AP) - Mayors from 30 Iowa cities have signed a letter written by U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley that asks Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to provide more federal funds to fight the tree-killing emerald ash borer.

In the letter sent Wednesday to Vilsack, Braley notes that an Agriculture Department fund made available to other states has been cut by more than 75 percent, leaving little for Iowa's response. Braley writes that Iowa deserves the support provided to other states and asks Vilsack to restore funding.

The letter is signed by 30 mayors, including those in Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Waterloo and West Des Moines.

The emerald ash borer has been found in 10 Iowa counties. It's expected to ultimately kill most of Iowa's more than 3 million ash trees.
