Building a Cancer Support System

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) For those battling cancer, building a support system is a critical first step in fighting the illness.
One way to build that support system is through sharing experiences.
On Sunday, the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids hosted a Cancer Survivors Day Celebration.
Doctors say for patients, sharing stories and experiences can have a positive impact during a difficult journey.
We have 14-million cancer survivors in the United States, so I think thats the most important thing, Dr. Vincent Reid, Medical Director for the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center said. It gives people the opportunity to fellowship, to share their experiences. You never know what people may learn when people talk to each other and ask each other question and just share ideas.
Doctor Reid says another major step for those with cancer is realizing that the diagnosis is no longer the death sentence it once was thanks to medical advancements. He also says its important for patients to remember that loved ones who dont have cancer are still taking the journey along with them.
