Celebrating Grant Wood

ANAMOSA, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) While the Iowa Arts Festival was being held in Iowa City this weekend, a smaller celebration of the arts took place in Anamosa on Sunday.

Artists and historians gathered at the Paint and Palette art gallery in Grant Wood Park to celebrate the life and work of renowned Iowa painter, Grant Wood.

Wood was known for his works such as American Gothic, but that wasnt always his style.

People with the Paint and Palette Club say Wood didnt find his true calling until he spent some time traveling abroad.

He tried to work and do artwork like the European artists, Janet Kittrell, Paint and Palette Club President said. But when he came back, someone encouraged him to just paint what he saw and when he looked out the window to see Iowa, he painted.

The Paint and Palette Club hopes to inspire younger artists to try their hand at painting in hopes of discovering that they have what it takes to become the next great painter.
