Happy Cinco de Mayo, A Brief History

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Today, Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated across the U.S. and Mexico with music, festivals and plenty of Mexican food, but what's the story behind the holiday?

It's to commemorate Mexican troops that defeated a much larger French army.

In the 1860's, Mexico had stopped paying money it owed to Europe and in response, the French sent in troops to an under-prepared Mexico.

Soldiers in Puebla - just east of Mexico City - were rallied to the battle and ended up winning an unlikely victory.

Mexico ended up losing the war, but May 5th, 1862 was a day that rallied people of Mexican descent together.

Cinco de Mayo is now celebrated throughout America and Mexico as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
