New Way To Visit Farmers Markets

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - A new partnership is working to make it easier for people to shop local in Cedar Rapids. Starting next weekend, a trolley will run between the Downtown Farmer's Market and NewBo City Market.

The Market to Market Trolley is an effort by NewBo and the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance to make shopping at both markets in one day more convenient. It's also an idea aimed at increasing sales for surrounding businesses in both downtown and the New Bohemia District.

Jessica Herold, the owner of Moods Salon and Spa just relocated her business of four years to Newbo one month ago.

I think it's fabulous. It gives us all the more exposure!" Herold said about the trolley.

Sydney Rieckhoff, who started her career selling vegetables at the Downtown Farmers Market opened up The Chill Ice Cream Shop at NewBo City Market about a year and a half ago. Now she and her family are opening a standalone ice cream shop right across from the City Market.

"I think that's great for business. I know from being at the (Downtown) Farmer's Market so often it is really hard to get from there to here, Sydney Rieckhoff,15, said.

The Market to Market Trolley will run the first and third Saturday of every month, June through September. It will run continuously from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

The trolley hasn't arrived  to Cedar Rapids yet. The partnership will be leasing it from Quad Cities Trolley and testing it out this season.
