CRPD K-9 Benefit

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Saturday's pleasant weather made for a perfect day to not only get out and play with the dogs, but also meet Cedar Rapids' furriest officers.

Pet's Playhouse along with the Cedar Rapids Police Department hosted their annual K-9 Benefit on Saturday.

Currently, the CRPD has seven K-9 officers in its unit, with two of those dogs still in training.

Officers with the unit say money is tight all around the country, so every dollar the CRPD can raise for their dogs can go along way.

"It's great when you can get a community to rally behind you," Casey Bilden, a handler/trainer for the K-9 unit, said. "Every little dollar adds up to help purchase our new dogs."

Officers with the K-9 unity say the owners of the Pet Playhouse have purchased several of the unit's dogs after they go into retirement.

They also say the unit's two newest officers still have a couple weeks of training left ahead of them before they're ready for duty.
