Child Hospitalized After Hit And Run

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- A 15-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a minivan Friday afternoon. It happened just after 3:00 p.m. near the intersection of 42nd St. NE and Center Point Rd. in Cedar Rapids.

Police say the boy was crossing the street when a man driving a green minivan hit the boy, then took off. Witnesses gave police a description of the van, which officers from Linn County and Hiawatha found at a nearby apartment complex.

The driver of the minivan was 44-year-old Robert Coover, Jr. Police say Coover called in the crash from the Hy-Vee Drugstore on Blairs Ferry Road. Police found Coover nearby, and he confessed to hitting the kid and driving off.

Coover has been charged with driving with a suspended license. Police say more charges are still possible.

The child has been transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with serious injuries.
