Volunteer Killed at State Fair Speedway

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A race track volunteer has died following the crash of a hobby stock car at the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines.

The Des Moines Register reports that the volunteer spotter was behind cement blocks in the backstretch on the north side of the track when the crash happened Friday night.

Authorities have not yet named the volunteer killed, but Midwest Racing Promotions, which manages speedway races, identified the man as Richard Welch.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Ben Lampe says the car lost control on the dirt track at about 8:30 p.m. and hit part of the concrete barrier. Debris went over the barrier, but Lampe said he didn't know whether the volunteer was struck by debris or by the car itself.
