Iowa City Teachers Face Cuts

CORALVILLE, Iowa (CBS 2/Fox 28) -- Teachers in the Iowa City Community School District are facing cutbacks to some programs.  Now teachers are wondering how they're going to handle the extra workload of students.

The district's music program, for example, is one of the best in the state.  Some teachers worry that the quality of that program could be jeopardized by the cuts.

The 3.6 million dollar budget cuts coming to the district will mean an overall reduction of band and orchestra teachers.

Just five teachers will be responsible for all of the 800 students who participate in band in the district's elementary schools.

The district says that it is hoping to work with teachers to figure out how to make the new numbers work, and they want instructors to be a part of the process.

The district's school board will hold a meeting on Tuesday night to discuss the issue.
