Area Businesses React To Casino Decision

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - There were most definitely plenty of businesses in the Kingston Village neighborhood that were disappointed with Thursdays 4-1 No vote that rejected plans to build a casino in Cedar Rapids.

Just yesterday, Popoli, an Italian restaurant opened in Kingston. It's part of GRR-DTE LLC Development Groups (Gary Richard Rozek- Down To Earth LLC)more than $8.5 million investment in the area that also includes four floors of converted commercial office space in the old Peoples Bank building and a 6 story condominium complex. Rozek, one of the groups partners, was also one of the original 22 investors on the Cedar Rapids casino project.

Im very, very disappointed. I feel sorry for the entire community of Cedar Rapids, especially all the people that put all the thought and effort into the project, Rozek said.
Yet, theres still plenty of optimism amongst businesses in the area.

Cedar Rapids should have got the casino. This whole area is going through a lot of re-development, so I think it's going to thrive no matter what, Brandon Godwin the manager of Popoli said.

Rozek agreed, but added that without the casino the area will develop more slowly. Yet, he said to keep in mind that the city has development agreements with four other buildings in Kingston.
