851 Million Gallons Water Missing in Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Officials in Waterloo say they lost more than 851 million gallons of water last year.
Waterloo Water Works General Manager Dennis Clark tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that 2013 was an especially bad year for "unaccounted" water.
The missing water is enough to fill up 1,300 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Clark says some of the missing water was due to flushing mains and hydrants, fighting fires and due to leaks.
But as to where the water specifically went, Clark says "we just don't know."
The missing water represents about 18.5 percent of all water pumped by the utility.
Waterloo Water works is working to reduce the water losses by locating leaks and repairing service lines more quickly as well as setting up construction meters faster.
