Iowa City Oks Changes to 21-Only Ordinance

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa City has approved several changes to an ordinance that bans people younger than 21 from being in bars late at night.
The changes clarify some rules that bars and other venues must meet if they want an exemption to the regulation.
The clarifications include the definition of a disc jockey, and specifies that they're not considered a performer whose shows go toward a 150-show requirement for the exemption.
More than five venues currently have the exemption.
The City Council made the changes during a meeting Tuesday. They passed the ordinance in 2010 as part of an effort to reduce binge drinking by University of Iowa students and other minors. The law has withstood two ballot votes to repeal it.
