Two More Juveniles Caught After Eldora Escape

DES MOINES, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) Two students who ran from the Eldora State Training School in north-central Iowa have been apprehended, and authorities continue searching for a third who remains at large.

The two students were apprehended in Cedar Rapids, one on Sunday evening and the other on Monday afternoon. The Muscatine County Sheriffs Office has reported that a third youth is a suspect in crimes over the weekend.

We appreciate the safe return of two students, and law enforcements continued efforts in searching for the third, said DHS Director Charles M. Palmer. We hope the young man can be apprehended without further incident.

A group of eight students ran from staff when they were escorted from the gymnasium to their cottage Thursday evening. Local law enforcement were contacted immediately to assist with the search for the youth, who ran into a nearby wooded area. Five students were returned to the facility within an hour.

The Eldora State Training School has 130 beds for seriously delinquent youth ages 12-18 who were adjudicated mainly for offenses against a person, including felonies and aggravated misdemeanors. The facility is accredited through the American Correctional Association, and the court orders placement there. Eldora provides treatment and educational services within a highly-structured setting to assist delinquent youth.
