April Blood Moon

Cedar Rapids (CBS2/FOX28) - The Blood Moon is fully eclipsed.

It's called the Blood Moon because of the burnt orange color that appears. Astronomers say the orange is visible because the light that is passing through the earth's atmosphere is being filtered and focused through the earth's shadow. The moon is actually moving through an area of red light so it lights up red.

This Blood Moon is one of four that will be visible in the next year and a half.

If you took a snap shot of the moon, please post it to our Facebook page and we may use them on air.
