Corridor Woman Receives Award for Volunteer Work

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- A Cedar Rapids woman who spends much of her time helping others, is getting a big thank you in return.

Home Instead Senior Care named 90-year-old Dorothy Nemecek Iowa's 2014 Outstanding Volunteer.

Nemecek started going to VFW halls after her husband returned home from World War II. She then eventually managed one for more than 10 years.

Since then, she's continued to give her time to veterans when they return home.

"Well, they need somewhere to go where they can feel at home and at least be acknowledged for what they've done," Nemecek said. "After all, they were out there, they're still out there for us, so we should be here for them."

Nemecek is now in the running for national recognition for her volunteer work.
