Amana High Schoolers Register to Vote

TIFFIN, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) -- Johnson County got a group of its newest voters to cast a ballot on Monday -- sort of.

County auditor Travis Weipert was at Clear Creek Amana High School helping seniors register to vote and explaining the election process.

Students then participated in a mock election to get the feel for filling out a ballot. That went a long way toward getting kids exciting about the process, Weipert said.

"Since we're here, you know, they realize we're not these strange, crazy people at the polling place where, if you show up and don't do something right, we're going to throw you out. We could tell as the class went on and they became a little more familiar with us, they were a little more relaxed and started asking a lot more questions," Weipert said.

The high school's government teachers have also brought in other elected officials, like county supervisors, to give students a firsthand experience with local government.
