Artificial Blood Created for 1st Time
(CBS 2/FOX 28) -- In a breakthrough that could revolutionize health care, researchers have created the first artificial blood suitable to use in the human body.
The breakthrough was achieved by British scientists. The breakthrough means it could one day be possible to manufacture blood rather than rely on donations.
The process involves genetically engineering adult cells into a form similar to stem cells. They are then cultured into red blood cells. The process has so far reached an efficiency of up to 50%. The entire process takes about a month to complete.
Scientists hope to begin human trials on the artificial blood in 2016. Patients would receive a small amount of man-made blood and monitored for any reactions.
The end result of all of this could mean the end of donor blood. Experts hope someday to easily and cheaply produce all the blood needed for transfusions around the world.
