Citizen's Police Academy: Week 4
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- CBS 2/FOX 28 continues to give you a look behind the scenes at the Cedar Rapids Police Department with the Citizen's Police Academy.
This week, we get a look at the criminal investigations division - which includes everything from polygraph testing, to narcotics investigations.
We learned that when it comes to criminal investigations, quite often routine is a rarity. It's a world where an ordinary can of cheese puffs can be hollowed out and used as a hiding place for drugs.
In collecting these pieces of evidence, and solving crimes, it helps to separate truth from fiction. That's why, among many tools, polygraph testing comes in handy.
We use polygraphs as an investigative tool to determine who will be responsible for a crime, Lt. Craig Furnish.
The tests arent admissible in court, but they can be used to help narrow down suspects. It measures heart rate, sweat glands, and other factors, as testers look for abnormalities in the reading. The department only does 5-10 tests a year. Many people agree initially, then back out at the last minute.
Usually, those taking the test are given questions before hand. The entire process can take 3 hours.
Next week, we burn some rubber and take a look at defensive driving techniques for officers. Join us right here every Thursday night as we take you inside the Citizen's Police Academy.
