Law May Void Some Absentee Ballots

DES MOINES, Iowa (CBS 2/Fox 28) -- A lack of change on a state law is causing some absentee ballots to be accidentally voided.

The issue occurs when the postal service doesn't postmark the business reply envelopes that absentee ballots are mailed back in.

A previous rule allowed officials to check the date on the signed document inside the envelope in order to verify the date the ballot was cast.  That rule was, however, repealed in 2011.

Data collected from past elections reveals that the issue has been widespread in the state.

Legislators have not been able to come up with a fix and officials say the issue will continue unless something is changed.
