Marion School Cuts

MARION, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- The Marion Independent School District is almost a million dollars in debt and now it's trying to figure out how to get out.

Finance leaders with the district say a drop in enrollment, staff raises, and a lack of money from the state have put the district in a tough spot.

The district will now weigh their options, including increasing taxes, cutting positions, or trimming the school week down to four days.

A higher tax rate is already in place for the independent district as well as surrounding districts.

The school board will lay out cost saving ideas next Monday.
