Firefighters Help Replace Smoke Detector Batteries

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is partnering with the Grant Wood Chapter of the American Red Cross for the annual "Battery Up" campaign from Thursday, March 6th through Saturday, March 8th.

Red Cross volunteers accompany Cedar Rapids firefighters to help replace worn or missing batteries in smoke alarms and perform a home fire safety inspection. The program is designed for senior citizens and physically-challenged citizens who need assistance installing and maintaining smoke alarms.

Last year, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers visited 173 homes. Firefighters changed 662 batteries and installed 42 new smoke alarms.
