Branstad Will Not Fire DHS Director

DES MOINES (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
Governor Terry Branstad is standing behind the director of the Iowa Human Services Department.
Branstad announced today during a weekly news conference that he will not fire Chuck Palmer.
A state senator previously said Palmer should lose his position because of mismanagement at the Iowa Juvenile Home.
   The governor disagrees.
He says Palmer is doing a good job and has appropriately handled all issues surrounding the now-closed facility.
"It's a very difficult job to be the director of the Department of Human Services.  He's uniquely qualified for this position, and he's handled it very well over a lot of years and handled a lot of difficult situations," said Branstad.
Branstad says the staff at the Iowa Juvenile Home is responsible for the mistreatment of the girls.
He is pushing to keep the home closed, after a judge reversed the decision last week.
