DBQ Co. Considers Cutting Recorder

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- Dubuque County officials are considering whether to eliminate the county recorder position in an effort to save money.
The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors says a consolidation of duties into other county offices could save taxpayer dollars. The supervisors are scheduled to discuss the issue Monday.
The county recorder's office maintains marriage and birth certificates, property records and other documents.
Officials say the proposal is preliminary, and would not happen before the general election in November. Supervisor Chairman Wayne Demmer says the move would require a referendum and community support.
Kathy Flynn Thurlow, the outgoing county recorder, says she doesn't support the idea. She adds that other counties have rejected similar proposals because they determined it would not save them money.
