IA Bill Would Allow Fantasy Sports Prizes

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Fantasy sports enthusiasts in Iowa could start winning money in their games under a bill moving through the Iowa Senate.

A Senate committee Monday approved legislation that would allow people to win monetary prizes playing in fantasy sports leagues. The bill will now move to the full Senate for a vote.

Currently, Iowa law does not allow people to play fantasy sports for money. These games, which are offered by major sports teams and other online outlets, invite people to "draft" a list of real players for an imagined team. The real-world statistics for the players determine if you beat other players' teams.

Sen. Rick Bertrand, a Republican from Sioux City, says the bill will not expand gambling but will just put Iowa rules in line with other states.
