IOWA CITY (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- FilmScene, Iowa City's new downtown non-profit movie theater, has released its initial numbers.
The theater is filling more seats than expected at its pedestrian mall location. The goal was to fill an average of 18 seats each night at the 67-seat theater. Instead, the average has been 40 a night, selling more than 5,500 tickets.
The organization is now asking the city to provide the theater with $75,000 to help the nonprofit partially cover a funding gap during its first three years. The city council will determine whether to formally approve and allocate the money.
If approved, the city would provide $35,000 in fiscal year 2015, then $25,000 in fiscal year 2016 and $15,000 in fiscal year 2017.
