Murder Suspect Has Cancer

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A Minnesota man charged with killing his wife in Iowa in 1997 is suffering from prostate cancer and may only have months to live.
John Bloomfield's attorney revealed the cancer diagnosis Thursday in asking a judge to allow the 73-year-old to be released from custody and live at home in St. Paul, Minn.
Bloomfield was charged in November in the slaying of his wife. He was a University of Iowa researcher then.
Attorney Leon Spies says Bloomfield would be better treated by his Minnesota doctors. He says his client would pay for electronic monitoring.
Assistant Johnson County Attorney Jude Pannell resisted Bloomfield's request for pretrial release. He says Bloomfield's condition is stabilizing and he's receiving excellent medical care at a prison hospital.
Judge Paul Miller says he'll rule soon.
