CBS 2 Heroes Special Edition: Chief Mike Horihan
WEST BRANCH (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan says he has seen a lot in his 30-plus years as a state trooper and police chief, but nothing could have prepared him for the discovery he made last Friday.
Chief Horihan is the one who found six-day-old Kayden Powell, after he was kidnapped from his Beloit, Wisconsin home, and left in a plastic tote bin behind the BP gas station in West Branch.
"I saw this tote and I saw other recycling containers around it," said Horihan. "I went inside and talked to the manager of the BP and brought him out and said 'is that your container?'" Horihan says the manager told him, "I've never seen it before," and Horihan had an "uneasy feeling."
"I was kind of thinking it was a coffin, you know, is what I was thinking. So it was scary," said Horihan.
But his scary, uneasy feeling quickly turned into hope. Horihan says, "When I heard the cry, it just totally surprised me, totally remarkable. I can tell you I don't think I've ever been so surprised in my life."
