Iowa Legislature Reconvenes Today
DES MOINES,IA (CBS 2/FOX28)-- Hugging, laughing, joking...if you didn't know better, you might think it was the first day of school.
But once the unmistakable sound of the gavel rang out, it was back to business as usual.
Even though the first day back in session may seem light-hearted, some hard-hitting issues lie ahead on the week's agenda, like the proposed 10- cent gas tax increase.
Supporters such as Joe Bolkcom, an Iowa state Senator, believes its needed to fix crucial infrastructure, saying "We have a 1989 gas tax trying to meet 2014 demands. roads and bridges are falling apart in our state, we need to move ahead with that"
Those opposed say other options need to be explored...House Representative Chip Baltimore explains, As a standalone issue, it's just not going to pass. i don't think that there's many people in the capitol wanting to increase the overall tax burden on Iowans."
Other hot button issues up for debate this week include: raising minimum wage, freezing tuition for state universities as well as the new voter I.D. proposal.
Even the house majority leader reminded lawmakers that especially in an election year, its important to put aside party differences and focus on whats best for Iowans.
When we spoke to members of the house and senate, both seemed to agree attending to current issues is more important than political ties...
