New Business in Newbo

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Like the flood of 2008, the recovery appears to be coming in waves as well and right now there's an explosion of activity in the Newbo neighborhood and along 16th Avenue.

That is especially evident just inside the doors of what may be the coolest bar building in Iowa, the historic 1917 Village Bank and Trust near Newbo City Market.  To answer your first question, yes there is a vault, but owners Corey Nanke and his cousin Jason know its the main dining room that's money.  The high ceilings make for an amazing space and the earth tone walls even out the bright light from the many windows.

Along with a massive bar this is the home of the new Newbo Alehouse.  American food favorites served starting in mid February and eventually in another room, a sushi and martini bar.  Jason says this is the place they wanted to be.  " I love the Newbo area.  I think there's a lot of growth happening down here and success for other places and this is just a great space we didn't want to see go to waste.  "

Where the lions stand guard .. over the river and through the Czech Village, Lion Bridge Brewing Company shines bright with giant vats visible through the front windows.  The new business in the heart of the Czech Village and just steps away from Sykora Bakery promises its own craft beers and a compatible menu.  The locked doors should open next month.

Back in Newbo, step inside an already well-known restaurant and ask Tony Bata if he's excited.  " Oh my gosh ha ha ha yes.  We've been hoping for this since we opened. "
The great eatery in the 1907 building opened 17 months ago.  Known for a kitchen with innovate specials and a Blueberry Burger, the owners soon hope to bring you dining by moonlight.  Tony says working with partners, nudging the house next door a little big should make room for a Bata's barbecue patio by the end of next summer.  " We wanted to have a large space that we could get 45 or 50 people in  .. space where we could maybe have acoustic music at times or different evens out there at times that would compliment what we're doing inside the business as well as in the neighborhood."

You can add at least one more to the list.  The Sauce Bar and Bistro is also set to open in the next two months.  All the activity along 16th Avenue and in Newbo might lead some to believe it's just more competition for your dollar.  But most business owners say it actually just means more traffic and customers coming to the area and that's good news for everybody.
