Deadly House Fire in Arlington

ARLINGTON, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--At least five people are dead, following a tragic house fire near Arlington.

It happened just after 3:30 this morning on F Avenue.

First responders say they could see the intensity of the fire as they drove to the scene. They say the fire looked to have taken over the house.

"When we came over the hill it was totally engulfed in flames and looked like roof was gone, said Arlington Fire Chief, Paul Seedorff.

Seedorff says they could tell there were people inside the house when they arrived but the conditions made it difficult for them to get in.

Beth Miller whos a friend of the family says there were five people living in the house including two small children.

She says hearing the news this morning was shocking.

"They looked out for my grandma. Just decent people, it's a tragedy, said Miller.

Fayette County Sheriff Fire Investigator, Iowa state fire marshal and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation are now investigating what could have caused the fire.

A deadly accident Seedorff says is rare for Arlington.

"We have a call three years ago like this and it's hard for a small community to deal with this, he said.
