GTC Not Finished But Functional

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- As crews touched up the outside of the Ground Transportation Center, it didn't have to be pretty, it just had to work.

"We still have some aesthetic treatments to take care of. They're still doing some things on the canopies," said Cedar Rapids Transit Manager Brad DeBrower. "It's not finished but it's functional. It'll be finished in the spring.

The building is designed to feel more open for passengers.

"I'm pretty happy they opened it back up and other people are too," said Howard Coakley, who needs the bus in order to look for work.

The changes also make it safer for buses to come and go, but it also comes with some fare changes.

"This was actually something that was part if our budget for this year," said DeBrower. "We just delayed the implementation until we actually got back to the center."

The cash rate went up a quarter and monthly passes will cost riders four more dollars. In addition to some other changes, rides on Saturday will be free for everyone.

"I don't really like the rate hike," said Gordon Nelson, who rides the bus nearly everyday. "It's great that they're letting people ride for free on Saturday but I'm paying for a 31-Day pass every month."

So Gordon feels like he's paying for those Saturday rides anyway. And after a year, the increase will cost him almost $50. Without any other option, all Gordon can do is hand over the extra cash.

"I've had to deal with rate hikes in the past," said Nelson. "It's no different than someone driving a car having to look at the price of gas going up or down."
